New Cardinals ace Sonny Gray will throw in a “simulated pregame state of affairs” on Sunday as he works his approach again from a hamstring pressure, in accordance with John Denton of MLB.com. If all goes effectively, Grey may very well be able to pitch within the staff’s opening sequence in opposition to the Dodgers from March 28-31. Nevertheless, supervisor Oliver Marmol advised Denton that he has not but selected his Opening Day starter. That means the skipper isn’t optimistic about Grey’s availability for the very first sport of the season.
The AL Cy Younger runner-up in 2023, Grey signed a three-year, $75 million cope with St. Louis this winter to be the membership’s new No. 1 starter. If he had been at full energy proper now, there could be no questions as to who would take the ball on Opening Day. Finally, nevertheless, the Cardinals received’t care who makes the symbolic sport one begin so long as Grey is wholesome sufficient for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
In a a lot much less optimistic harm replace, right-hander Keynan Middleton will likely be shut down for 10 days as he nurses a forearm pressure in his pitching arm (first reported by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). Whereas Grey was the Cardinals’ greatest free agent acquisition for the rotation, Middleton was their greatest free agent acquisition for the bullpen. As Marmol advised Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, this “will clearly set [Middleton] again a number of weeks,” primarily guaranteeing that he’ll begin the 12 months on the IL. In accordance with Katie Woo of The Athletic, St. Louis plans to be with out the righty for a minimum of the primary two weeks of the season.
Middleton was a powerful center reliever for the White Sox and Yankees final 12 months, pitching 50 2/3 innings and placing up a 3.38 ERA. He has hung out on the IL in nearly each season of his profession, and 2023 was no exception; he missed most of September with a shoulder harm. Nonetheless, his 51 appearances had been his most in a season since his 2017 rookie marketing campaign. He additionally posted a career-high 30.2% strikeout charge (his earlier profession common was 22.1%), a career-high 56.6% groundball charge (his earlier profession common was 32.9%), and ranked among the many high 10% of pitchers in hard-hit charge and common exit velocity, per Baseball Savant. In consequence, he completed with a 3.71 xERA, the bottom of his profession.
Whereas the Cardinals will hope Middleton doesn’t miss an excessive amount of of the common season, they should take into account new bullpen choices in his place. Ryan Helsley, Giovanny Gallegos, Andrew Kittredge, and JoJo Romero are locks for the Opening Day roster, whereas Andre Pallante is a protected guess as effectively. After these 5 names, Denton mentions Riley O’Brien, Nick Robertson, and Rule 5 draft choice Ryan Fernandez as contenders for the ultimate three spots within the ’pen. Woo suggests the staff has additionally thought of a six-man rotation, which might imply operating with a seven-man bullpen.
On the opposite facet of the ball, the Cardinals have a call to make in heart area. As Tommy Edman continues to cope with ache in his wrist after offseason surgical procedure, he will not be on the Opening Day roster. Dylan Carlson might need appeared like the plain option to fill in for Edman, however Marmol told Denton that the beginning job in heart area continues to be up for grabs. Carlson is a contender, however so are prospects Victor Scott II and Michael Siani.
Scott is the No. 83 prospect in baseball, in accordance with each Baseball America and FanGraphs. He boasts unbelievable pace and performs phenomenal heart area protection. Siani has an analogous talent set however doesn’t have the identical upside, which might find yourself serving to his case to win the job; the Cardinals will likely be much less inclined to hurry Scott to the main leagues. Siani additionally has an edge as a result of he’s already on the 40-man roster. Carlson has higher offensive talents than both of the rookies, however he’s coming off a disappointing season on the plate. Furthermore, whereas he’s a succesful defensive outfielder, each Scott and Siani have elite defensive potential. If Marmol isn’t satisfied Carlson can determine issues out on the dish, he may want to prioritize protection up the center.
