An NCAA Event that opened with insanity settled into chalk after the spherical of 32 completed on Sunday. For the first time since 2019, and solely the fifth time within the match’s historical past, all of the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have superior to the Candy 16.
Coming off final yr’s historically low-seeded Ultimate 4, it regarded like parity would once more reign supreme when a No. 14, No. 13, two No. 12 and three No. 11 seeds gained their opening matchups this yr. Alas, the clock struck midnight in the course of the second spherical for all however one among this yr’s aspiring Cinderellas. And the lone double-digit interloper within the in any other case surprise-free Candy 16 got here by way of the South area when a matchup assured to supply a low-seeded Candy 16 group noticed No. 11 NC State take down No. 14 Oakland in OT.
What’s been unhealthy for followers of small faculty underdogs in search of a protracted second within the highlight has been good for the NCAA match and their broadcasting companions. Rankings throughout the primary three days have been the highest of all time, with a median of 9 million viewers watching the video games performed via Saturday.
One other winner from this stunning run of favorites domination is presidential brackets. In his match preview present, “King Charles,” on CNN, Charles Barkley skewered Barack Obama’s bracket-picking as too “conventional” and akin to “copying off everybody else’s paper.”
Barkley may need some floor left on which to defend his comment that “he [Obama] simply cheated off everybody in America.” However he cannot argue with the outcomes that Obama or President Joe Biden have seen thus far.
One ultimate beneficiary of a bracket largely following true to seeds has been the betting public, who parlayed a weekend of money line favorites going 15-1 into scoring an elusive chink within the “home at all times wins” armor.
In an interview with ESPN, John Murray, the chief director of the Tremendous Ebook in Las Vegas, in contrast this weekend’s NCAA match to a “unhealthy faculty soccer Saturday.” Murray went on to say:
“Saturday was fairly ugly, we had been up an honest quantity midway via the day, however you could possibly see the liabilities constructing. We would have liked Texas [vs. Tennessee] or Oakland [vs. NC State] to interrupt up the parlays, however each fell brief. By the point we bought to the final recreation, we had been caught. Everybody parlays all of the favorites … they don’t seem to be purported to all win,” he added. “We transfer on.”
With three rounds and fifteen video games left to play, there’s loads of time for the insanity to take again over, however via the primary two rounds, the clear upset of the match has been the dearth of many upsets in any respect.
