In a throwback to, effectively, 2021, a pitcher batted in a serious league sport Wednesday. The outcome was predictable, if not painfully hilarious, for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With the New York Yankees nursing a 6-5 lead within the eleventh inning, the Diamondbacks had exhausted their bench and supervisor Aaron Boone knew it. After deliberately loading the bases with two outs, he pressured Arizona to ship a reliever to the plate in Scott McGough, who had a grand whole of zero at-bats within the Majors as much as that time.
Unsurprisingly, Caleb Ferguson struck McGough out seeking to finish the ball sport.
