The Purple Sox introduced right now that left-hander Chris Murphy underwent a profitable reconstruction of the left ulnar collateral ligament, also referred to as Tommy John surgical procedure. It was reported just a few weeks in the past that the lefty had broken the ligament and he’s already on the 60-day injured checklist.
Murphy, 26 in June, made his main league debut with the Sox final 12 months. He tossed 47 2/3 innings over 20 appearances with an earned run common of 4.91, although higher underlying numbers. His 23.1% strikeout fee, 8% stroll fee and 44.7% floor ball fee have been all fairly near league common however his .321 batting common on balls in play and 67.2% strand fee have been on the unfortunate aspect. His 3.70 FIP and three.88 SIERA have been every greater than a run higher than his ERA.
That huge league work was all out of the bullpen however he had been working as a starter within the minor leagues. With two remaining possibility years, he might have both continued figuring out of the large league bullpen or maybe been despatched to Triple-A for some rotation depth. The Sox didn’t have to make that call as soon as the ligament injury was found. Now that Murphy has gone underneath the knife, he’ll sadly should miss all the season and sure a good chunk of 2025 as effectively.
If there’s one silver lining for Murphy, it’s that he’ll stay on the injured checklist all 12 months, accumulating huge league pay and repair time. He’ll look to get wholesome and get his profession again on monitor subsequent 12 months, doubtless round his twenty seventh birthday.
For the Sox, this provides to a rising pile of accidents to their rotation choices. Lucas Giolito will even miss the 2024 marketing campaign after present process elbow surgical procedure whereas Nick Pivetta just lately landed on the IL as a result of a flexor pressure. For now, the membership has Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock in 4 rotation spots, although that group is pretty missing in expertise. None of these 4 hurlers have greater than 265 profession innings on the huge league degree nor have they ever hit 160 in a person marketing campaign.
The Sox are hoping Pivetta’s subject is gentle however they might want to cowl his rotation spot for just a few turns regardless. Each Josh Winckowski and Chase Anderson made lengthy reduction appearances just lately and will maybe be stretch out pretty simply whereas Cooper Criswell and Naoyuki Uwasawa are the 40-man roster however at present on non-compulsory task.
