The Diamondbacks are pausing Eduardo Rodriguez’s throwing program after the southpaw reported continued lat tightness, supervisor Torey Lovullo advised reporters (video provided by Arizona Sports). It’s unclear for the way lengthy he’ll be shut down, but it surely represents a setback in his efforts to make his workforce debut.
Rodriguez suffered a lat pressure throughout his fourth Spring Coaching look. He began the season on the 15-day injured listing. The Snakes reportedly anticipated him to be sidelined for round a month, although this can absolutely push that timetable again. It’s an inauspicious begin to his four-year, $80MM free agent deal.
Arizona seen Rodriguez as the mandatory higher mid-rotation arm to fit behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. He turned in that stage of manufacturing for the Tigers a yr in the past, working to a career-low 3.30 ERA with stable strikeout and stroll charges over 152 2/3 innings. Whereas there’s nonetheless loads of time for Rodriguez to fulfill the group’s expectations, it appears possible he’ll at the very least be out of motion into Could.
Inside weeks of Rodriguez’s damage, the D-Backs made a shocking late strike for Jordan Montgomery. Maybe Arizona would have discovered the southpaw’s asking worth (one yr, $25MM with a vesting participant choice for 2025) too good to cross up in any case. That addition may tackle added significance within the wake of this setback. Montgomery is constructing into sport form with Triple-A Reno and is anticipated to be referred to as to the majors by the tip of subsequent week.
Gallen and Kelly are once more off to glorious begins, but the ultimate three rotation spots have been an issue. Brandon Pfaadt isn’t in any hazard of shedding his job however is sitting on a 6.48 ERA via his first three begins. Tommy Henry has allowed 10 runs over 14 innings, whereas Ryne Nelson has been tagged for eight runs in 7 2/3 frames over his first two outings. One in every of Nelson or Henry appears more likely to head to Triple-A as soon as Montgomery is able to step into the massive league workers.
