Fabrizio Romano has revealed there may be “some curiosity” in Mason Greenwood from English golf equipment as Manchester United look to promote the 22-year-old ahead to the best bidder this summer time.
Greenwood has spent the season on mortgage at Getafe in La Liga following widespread condemnation at a plan by executives at Outdated Trafford to reintegrate the participant again into the United first-team.
Greenwood has not performed for the Reds since January 2022, following his arrest on suspicion of assault, tried rape and threats to kill. He was later charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) with tried rape, partaking in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning precise bodily hurt.
These fees had been then dropped in February 2023 with the CPS revealing there was “not a practical prospect of conviction”, owing to key witnesses withdrawing their cooperation from the investigation and new materials coming to gentle.
This left United in a tough scenario as there was not a authorized case in opposition to their ahead; moderately, it had turn into an ethical one. The query of whether or not it will acceptable for Greenwood to return to the fold at Outdated Trafford brought on the membership to launch an inside investigation into the matter, led by Richard Arnold – United’s former chief govt.
This investigation reached a conclusion after six months, with The Athletic leaking the membership’s intention to reintegrate Greenwood in Erik ten Hag’s squad. It was met with fierce opposition throughout United’s fanbase, nevertheless.
This led the manager crew right into a panicked resolution to reverse their plan, finally agreeing a hastily-arranged year-long mortgage deal to Getafe. This allowed Greenwood to renew his soccer profession away from the eyes of the British public and media.
Whereas the ahead has impressed for the Liga aspect, there have been sufficient moments of controversy – one even involving England’s golden boy, Jude Bellingham – to counsel it unwise for United to welcome the 22 12 months previous again to Manchester this summer time.
Certainly, a remark from Sir Jim Ratcliffe – the membership’s new co-owner – concerning the prospect of Greenwood returning was reported to have angered many employees at Outdated Trafford. If United had been to truly attempt to reintegrate him, there would doubtless be uproar – from inside and out of doors the membership.
Which is why this replace Romano supplied on Greenwood’s future was such a shock.
In an interview, the Italian switch guru was requested for the newest developments on golf equipment desirous about signing the ahead. “Many golf equipment in Spain, however in England there may be additionally some curiosity,” Romano replied. This can be a moderately stunning growth as most of the similar points United confronted when making an attempt to reintegrate Greenwood final summer time will stay true ought to one other crew, within the Premier League for instance, attempt to do the identical.
No matter this, nevertheless, Romano defined it’s a “good scenario” for United, “as a result of there are lots of golf equipment ” and the Reds are “ready to money in” to generate as a lot earnings as attainable.
The acute strain of economic honest play will affect United’s capability to spend freely available in the market this summer time. A complete overhaul of the squad is required with INEOS eager to make a splash of their first switch window on the helm of the membership.
As such, any gamers not wished by (or in Greenwood’s case, capable of play for) United, who will be offered for at an excellent value, will likely be a much-needed increase to their funds. Academy gamers, specifically, are thought of treasure troves from an FFP perspective as there is no such thing as a inbound switch charge to account for – as Greenwood is.
Romano concludes by stating, “I don’t see Mason Greenwood staying on the membership.” Whereas his departure seems sure, the ahead’s subsequent house is much less clear – it could even, shockingly, be in England, if Romano’s phrases show appropriate.
