The outcomes Manchester United are in a position to obtain in direction of the tip of season “will probably be necessary” within the membership’s choice over the long-term way forward for Erik ten Hag, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.
Writing in his Day by day Briefing column, the Italian switch guru made reference to the “troublesome” recreation United endured towards Brentford final night time. The Bees completely outplayed Ten Hag’s facet and will simply have taken all three factors, regardless of the 1-1 rating line.
It was a outcome which dialled the strain up on the Dutch supervisor as United’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification grew even slimmer, following wins for Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
Ten Hag’s place at Outdated Trafford has been underneath intense scrutiny prior to now few weeks. Gareth Southgate has been reported as INEOS’ first-choice goal ought to United’s new leaders determine they need a change of supervisor, whereas Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nageslmann and Thomas Tuchel are additionally believed to be into account.
INEOS are content material for Ten Hag to stay in place till the tip of the season, nevertheless. They’ll then decide on the Dutchman’s future at this level.
Romano reveals there may be an ongoing dialog over the state of affairs at Outdated Trafford, with a variety of elements prone to play an necessary half within the eventual choice:
“It’s one thing regular when you’ve got new (co) homeowners to debate the supervisor place internally. Conversations between INEOS and Ten Hag have all the time been good and constructive within the current months; however ends in the ultimate two months will probably be necessary to decide on Ten Hag. Additionally, Man United need to finalise their board construction earlier than making any ultimate choice on the supervisor.”
Omar Berrada will assume his function as United’s new chief govt on the finish of the season. He’s anticipated to be joined by Dan Ashworth as a sporting director, if a compensatory deal will be struck with present membership Newcastle. Additional appointments when it comes to a recruitment specialist and a variety of technical administrators may also be made to finish this new govt construction.
INEOS wish to wait till this crew is totally assembled earlier than reaching a definitive choice on Ten Hag, which performs in with their willingness to let him see out the season.
However Romano’s assertion is that the outcomes Ten Hag is ready to obtain with United up till that time will probably be “necessary” within the alternative the Dutchman’s new bosses make; which is why yesterday’s abysmal efficiency on the Gtech Group Stadium was so vital.
United didn’t resemble a crew who had spent 18 months being coached by the identical supervisor. There was no apparent fashion of play, nor any semblance of efficient soccer. They merely seemed horrible. And whereas there are nonetheless key gamers out injured, this was additionally true for Brentford.
But Thomas Frank’s facet had been wonderful, out and in of possession. They defended with depth and dedication and attacked with function. Ultimately, the 1-1 rating line flattered United enormously with the xG (anticipated objectives) studying Brentford (3.11) – United (0.51) – the next rating than the Bees achieved within the 4-0 demolition in the identical fixture final season.
Final season:
Brentford (2.06) 4-0 (0.68) Man UtdThis season:
Brentford (3.11) 1-1 (0.51) Man Utd— The xG Philosophy (@xGPhilosophy) March 30, 2024
Whereas a degree away to Brentford just isn’t a horrible outcome, it was a horrible efficiency. Ten Hag won’t be able to endure too many matches in the same vein to final night time if he’s to have any hope of being in control of United’s journey to the Gtech Group Stadium subsequent season.
It’s a outcomes based mostly enterprise in any case; and horrible performances translate into horrible outcomes ultimately.
