One-time Most Invaluable Participant and present CBS Sports activities NFL analyst Matt Ryan made it recognized throughout a Monday look on the FanDuel TV “Up & Adams” program that he’s a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars taking a flier on former New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in alternate for a 2024 sixth-round draft choose this offseason.
“I view it as no draw back,” Ryan mentioned in regards to the anticipated commerce, as shared by Adam London of NESN. “You speak about giving up a sixth-round choose — this was a first-round choose simply a few years in the past that was in a Professional Bowl. Given the circumstances that went on in New England, too, I believe it’s arduous to have an entire image of what Mac Jones is as a quarterback on this league. (Jaguars QB1) Trevor Lawrence had these damage points on the finish of final season. He toughed it out and he gutted via it, which is admirable, however you by no means know when that’s going to occur.”
Jones’ relationship with former Patriots head coach Invoice Belichick reportedly started to crumble through the 2022 season, and Belichick pulled Jones from video games 4 totally different instances this previous marketing campaign earlier than the 2021 first-round draft choose spent the season’s ultimate six contests as a benched spectator. Moreover, a number of stories have described what was mentioned to be a “toxic” scenario inside New England’s quarterback room over the previous two years.
As for Lawrence, he missed a start for the primary time in his profession when he sat with a sprained proper shoulder this previous December. The Jaguars finally missed the playoffs and completed the season with a 9-8 document.
Ryan famous how present Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson wanted to show to backup quarterback Nick Foles to assist the Philadelphia Eagles win Tremendous Bowl LII when starter Carson Wentz was injured through the 2017 season.
“I have a look at it and say in the event that they’re actually attempting to win a Tremendous Bowl, in the event that they’re attempting to construct it and you will get a backup quarterback that has a lot beginning expertise and a capability to go win video games, you by no means know what’s going to Trevor Lawrence,” Ryan added about Jacksonville formally touchdown Jones after the brand new league yr opens on Wednesday. “If you happen to can purchase a man for a sixth-round choose, to me it makes plenty of sense.”
Each Jones and New England clearly wanted this divorce, and he now will take pleasure in a profession reset spending the spring and summer season realizing he’ll study a brand new offense as a backup so long as Lawrence stays wholesome. Maybe Pederson can reach getting the very best out of Jones after Belichick failed the 25-year-old in a number of methods following the 2021 season.
