When the search was ongoing to discover a fundamental occasion for UFC 300, welterweight champion Leon Edwards was approached about a number of completely different opponents and he accepted each problem thrown at him. In a weird twist, nonetheless, Belal Muhammad wasn’t on that listing regardless of his standing because the unanimous No. 1 contender within the division.
Ultimately, the UFC didn’t e book Edwards for the historic occasion on April 13 and the court docket of public opinion has overwhelmingly declared Muhammad because the rightful contender subsequent in line.
Gilbert Burns, who fell to Muhammad by way of determination this previous Could, says there’s no query in anyway that his former opponent deserves the following shot on the title and he really offers him an awesome shot at beating Edwards. However he additionally understands why Muhammad most likely wasn’t the primary option to face Edwards in a marquee fundamental occasion.
“I believe the struggle is means nearer than folks assume, Burns advised MMA Preventing. “I watched plenty of Belal Muhammad’s fights, I watch plenty of Leon Edwards’ fights and Belal has a means higher probability that folks assume. I don’t assume it’s going to be an entertaining struggle, that’s why it’s not going to be at UFC 300.”
He could not get too excited to look at him carry out however Burns completely stands by Muhammad because the No. 1 contender within the division.
Maybe the largest downside plaguing Muhammad comes all the way down to an absence of recognition with a wider, mainstream viewers however Burns believes that at the least a part of these points are self-inflicted wounds. He looks like Muhammad goes out of his method to make feedback that rub folks the unsuitable means and it not often ends effectively for him.
“Belal deserves it though everyone knows he’s not essentially the most entertaining type,” Burns mentioned. “Let me phrase that [different] as a result of in any other case he’s going to make a clip out of me saying that. I don’t assume he’s too sensible with a few issues he says. He tried to select a struggle. Individuals in Brazil hate Belal Muhammad simply the truth that he beat me. It’s all good, he beat me honest and sq., he deserves the title shot however then he goes on the market [and says] Charles Oliveira received a lower, he ran away from the struggle [with Islam Makhachev]. A pair issues that you simply’re attacking plenty of unhealthy feedback, plenty of unhealthy vitality.
“I simply assume that he’s not sensible with the issues he says and that doesn’t assist him and he’s not as entertaining because the struggle followers like. However it’s what it’s. The man retains successful fights, 10 struggle win streak one thing like that, for positive he deserves the title shot.”
Assuming the matchup finally comes collectively, Burns leans barely in direction of Edwards as the favourite to win however he’s not assured that the reigning champion will hear “and nonetheless” when the night time is over.
After spending 25 minutes within the cage with him, Burns is aware of the form of relentless strategy that Muhammad employs in his fights to get the job completed. That type could not earn him many Battle of the Night time awards however it can positively get him wins and that’s all that issues.
“If Belal makes it a freaking canine struggle, if he could be inside and attempt to use wrestling, he has a loopy fuel tank — if he’s inside making it a canine struggle, I believe he can win,” Burns mentioned. “I believe that’s precisely what he’s going to attempt to do. I do assume Leon is the favourite however I’ll say, it’s lower than 55-45. It’s means nearer.
“As a result of Belal Muhammad is sweet all over the place. He’s not nice wherever however he’s good all over the place and he is aware of the right way to win a struggle. He’s a tricky man to struggle. I don’t assume Leon is underestimating him but when he does, Belal can get a win. It’s quite a bit nearer than folks assume. Belal Muhammad is that good. He’s not that entertaining however he’s very, superb. I do consider it’s going to be nearer than folks assume. Belal can get a win in that struggle.”
Together with his personal struggle developing in opposition to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299, Burns hopes to place himself again within the title dialog with a win.
Following Edwards efficiently defending his title in opposition to Colby Covington this previous December, his head coach Dave Lovell really mentioned that Burns “brings extra to the desk than Belal Muhammad” when considering what comes subsequent for his fighter.
Burns appreciates the nod — even when he nonetheless believes Muhammad deserves the shot over him — however at the least he is aware of he’s received Edwards’ consideration.
“It’s good for me at the least to see that Leon Edwards’ group is searching for me,” Burns mentioned. “I consider a giant win over Jack [Della] Maddalena, a end will get me tremendous shut to a different title shot.”
