How top G League Ignite players have performed in the NBA

The NBA’s G League Ignite program made quick waves on the day it was introduced by including a high prospect of the 2020 basketball recruiting class, taking pictures guard Jalen Inexperienced, to its roster on Day 1.

Inexperienced was a can’t-miss prospect popping out of the prep ranks, an elite and explosive athlete with robust shot-making capacity extending out to the three-point line. And his time with the Ignite was roughly a hit. He was there for one season, averaging 17.9 factors, 4.1 rebounds and a couple of.8 assists on 46.1 % taking pictures, numbers spectacular sufficient to earn him the No. 2 draft spot within the 2021 draft.

So Inexperienced went from the No. 2 ranked highschool prospect within the nation (via 247 Sports) to being the second participant drafted within the subsequent draft class, marking his story a profitable improvement undertaking for the G League Ignite.

Then again, the truth that it’s taken so long as it has for Inexperienced, now with the Houston Rockets, to show into one thing not less than resembling a former No. 2 general decide might mirror poorly on the event he received whereas taking part in within the G League. And if this text had been written a month in the past, we would not even be placing it in such sort phrases, as Inexperienced’s first two-plus seasons within the NBA have been removed from nice.

Certain, he’s put up respectable numbers as an NBA participant, with profession averages of 19.6 factors, 4.0 rebounds and three.2 assists, however his profession swing ranking is -4.3 points per 100 possessions whereas Houston, over his rookie and sophomore campaigns, was one of many worst groups within the league.

After all, it’s unimaginable to pin that absolutely on Inexperienced, who did should take care of Stephen Silas as his head coach for 2 years, however his sport didn’t scream NBA-ready star for fairly a while. Solely lately has Inexperienced flashed his star potential for a constant sufficient period of time for it to be thought-about noteworthy.

You’d assume that growing in an NBA-backed program “taking part in in opposition to grown males” within the G League, a speaking level that used to get tossed round quite a bit in protection of the Ignite program, Inexperienced would have had a greater understanding of the NBA sport by the point he was drafted.

That was clearly not the case, nevertheless.

So in some methods, Inexperienced’s story out of the G League Ignite path was a profitable one. However in others, it speaks considerably poorly of simply what sort of improvement these gamers who got here out of the G League Ignite really received.
