The Mets introduced that right-hander Kodai Senga was transferred to the 60-day injured checklist. That’s the corresponding transfer to open a roster spot for left-hander Tyler Jay, who was reported to be becoming a member of the membership earlier.
Throughout spring coaching, Senga, 31, was recognized with a average posterior capsule pressure in his throwing shoulder and began the season on the 15-day IL. He’ll now be ineligible to return till 60 days from that preliminary IL placement in late Might. Supervisor Carlos Mendoza mentioned Tuesday that Senga nonetheless has not thrown off a mound, per Will Sammon of The Athletic.
The information of Senga’s harm got here in late February, and the membership initially deliberate for a shutdown interval of not less than three weeks, although they later deliberate on including one other seven to 10 days to be cautious. It was reported virtually three weeks in the past that Senga was to start a throwing program, however the truth that he has not made it to a mound but means that he both had some form of setback or is being ramped up very slowly. Regardless of the motive, the Mets apparently don’t anticipate Senga to have the ability to rejoin the membership within the subsequent six weeks.
It’s clearly a irritating improvement for Senga and the crew. The righty came to visit from Japan final 12 months and was a direct success, pitching 166 1/3 innings with a 2.98 earned run common. His 11.1% stroll price was a tad excessive, however he struck out 29.1% of batters confronted whereas maintaining 44.7% of balls in play on the bottom. He completed seventh within the Nationwide Cy Younger voting and second within the Rookie of the 12 months voting.
Rotation well being has been a difficulty for the Mets thus far this 12 months. David Peterson required hip surgical procedure within the offseason and started the 12 months on the IL, whereas Senga and Max Kranick adopted him as a consequence of spring accidents, the latter struggling a hamstring pressure. Tylor Megill took a rotation spot to start out the 12 months however landed on the IL himself after only one outing as a consequence of a shoulder pressure.
The present rotation consists of Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser, with José Buttó prone to be recalled quickly to affix that group. Till the injured hurlers return, Joey Lucchesi is probably going the highest depth choice, as he’s on the 40-man roster and at the moment on non-obligatory task.
