The Mets have launched first baseman Luke Voit, as indicated on his player page at MLB.com. He’s as soon as once more a free agent.
Voit inked a minor league pact with the Mets again in February. Whereas he doesn’t have the requisite service time to qualify as an Article XX(B) free agent and thus safe a typical opt-out date 5 days previous to the beginning of the season, his minor league contract included an opt-out this previous weekend.
The 33-year-old Voit had a troublesome go of it in Mets camp, tallying 41 plate appearances however batting simply .118/.220/.235 with a homer, a double and 14 strikeouts (34.1%). That efficiency, coming off a down season during which he hit simply .221/.284/.265 in a small pattern of 74 plate appearances with the Brewers made it tough to examine the previous Yankee slugger successful a spot on the roster in Queens.
Voit led all of Main League Baseball with 22 homers within the pandemic-shortened 2020 season — a part of a quick peak with the Yanks the place he carried out like one of many recreation’s high offensive first basemen. From 2018-20, Voit turned in a mixed .278/.371/.541 slash with 58 huge flies in 905 plate appearances. He was strikeout-prone (26.7%) however drew loads of walks (11.6%) and had greater than sufficient thump in his bat to offset the penchant for punchouts.
Accidents have since derailed that promising trajectory. Voit tore the meniscus in his left knee throughout spring coaching 2021 and underwent surgical procedure. Two weeks after being activated in Might, he suffered a Grade 2 indirect pressure. Voit appeared to hurry again from that harm, returning in beneath a month, and simply weeks later was again on the shelf with ache in his surgically repaired knee. He returned once more in August however headed again to the injured record with continued knee troubles the next month. Voit had a wholesome however middling season on the plate in 2022 between the Padres and Nationals. His 2023 marketing campaign was slowed by a neck harm.
It appears like longer than three years in the past that Voit was a prime-aged slugger coming off a league-leading dwelling run complete, however that’s to be anticipated for a hitter who’s gone via the in depth set of accidents he’s skilled. His spring displaying didn’t lend a lot credence to the concept of a rebound, however Voit demolished Triple-A pitching in restricted motion final 12 months, hitting .263/.420/.615 (153 wRC+) with 15 homers in simply 200 plate appearances between the Brewers and Mets organizations. That a minimum of confirmed that there’s nonetheless some life in his bat, and between that efficiency and his monitor report with the Yankees, he ought to be capable of latch on with a brand new minor league deal elsewhere.
