Justin Gaethje is ready to make some extra historical past at UFC 300.
Few fighters, if any, match the invoice of a BMF greater than the human “Spotlight.” Subsequently, it’s excellent that Gaethje would be the first fighter to defend the UFC’s BMF title on the large UFC 300 stage when he fights Max Holloway contained in the T-Cell Enviornment in Las Vegas this Saturday.
The inaugural BMF title led to an undisputed title shot for the then-top welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal in July 2020. 4 years later, the identical expectation fell upon the 35-year-old Gaethje, who knocked out Dustin Poirier with a redemptive head kick to change into the title holder at UFC 291 in July 2023. Nevertheless, the celebrities didn’t align for a matchup between the present light-weight champion Islam Makhachev, and the division’s fixed violence supplier.
Timing might result in a path for Poirier earlier than all others try and dethrone Makhachev. “Aggravated,” Gaethje now expects he received’t be subsequent for Makhachev it doesn’t matter what occurs on Saturday.
“Ideally, they’re calling this [Charles] Oliveira-[Arman] Tsarukyan battle a title eliminator, so the winner of that battle fights [Makhachev] in June, then I battle the winner of that in ideally Madison Sq. Backyard in November,” Gaethje instructed MMA Junkie. “That appears like an ideal timeline for me. I’ll undoubtedly have my time to relaxation, get better, and retrain myself to prepare for that battle.
“That’s the right state of affairs for me. We’ll see if Oliveira s**** the mattress once more. I feel if Tsarukyan wins he takes it as a result of they’re calling this a title eliminator, so whoever wins goes to need to battle that battle.”
Gaethje’s win over Poirier put him again on a profitable streak after a majority choice over Rafael Fiziev the earlier March. That alone had the Tucson, Ariz., native in line for his potential third crack at undisputed UFC gold. As an alternative, the BMF bout got here alongside and Oliveira’s harm forward of his Makhachev rematch at UFC 294 in October resulted in an Alexander Volkanovski fill-in.
In line with Gaethje, there wasn’t any plan or discussions for the title conflict in early 2024 as hoped. With out rationalization as to why, Gaethje continues to regulate what he can, and that’s racking up wins towards massive names, like the previous featherweight champion Holloway.
“I feel should you admire the way in which that this sport works, I fought Fiziev, I knocked out the No. 2 man (Poirier) and there’s no person left,” Gaethje mentioned. “Oliveira was speculated to battle him in October. I used to be speculated to battle the winner of that battle in February. Nevertheless it didn’t work out like that so that is the place we’re at, and that is what I’ve to maintain.”
