Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is conflicted in regards to the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match on July twentieth on Netflix.
Whereas De La Hoya likes the concept of extra followers tuning in to look at the game, he feels it’s a nasty picture with the 27-year-old YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul dealing with the 58-year-old retired Tyson, who hasn’t fought in 19 years since 2005.
De La Hoya thinks that Jake has the youth and stamina of a younger man to put on down Tyson to defeat him if the Texas Fee sanctions the battle as an actual boxing match.
Nonetheless, he does consider that Tyson hits exhausting sufficient to knock out Jake if he lands one in all his large punches, and surprisingly, he nonetheless has superior hand velocity than him.
Oscar feels that Jake ought to work by way of the ranks like different fighters, dealing with contenders to get to the extent the place he can battle for a world title. That’s not what Jake’s profession is about. He’s doing this for cash, peddling his fights to MMA followers and his massive 26 million Instagram followers and making big dough.
Jake’s previous opponents:
- Tommy Fury: Second-tier cruiserweight
- Anderson Silva: 48-years-old
- Nate Diaz: 38
- Ben Askren: 39
- Tyrone Woodley x 2: 41
- Nate Robinson: 39
- Andre August: 35
- Ryan Bourland: 35
Jake is taking this battle for cash and for no different purpose. That’s his final hustle, as he’s been combating principally older ex-NBA, MMA, and low-level boxers.
‘Not the Proper Picture’
“It’s going to carry extra eyeballs to the game of boxing, however my beef with it’s it’s not the suitable picture for us as a critical sport,” mentioned promoter Oscar De La Hoya to Fighthype in regards to the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson battle on July twentieth.
“Jake Paul, I commend him for what he’s doing. Jake Paul can get to a world title, but when he takes a unique route. This route, going up towards Mike Tyson, it’s simply not the suitable one for me. I like Mike Tyson and respect Mike Tyson, particularly if Texas OKs this battle to be an formally sanctioned proper,” mentioned De La Hoya.
The Path to Legitimacy vs. The Spectacle
“I don’t know the way that’s going to work. Mike Tyson is 60-years-old. Jake Paul is 26, 27. If Jake Paul desires to take boxing critical, take a unique route,” mentioned De La Hoya. “Take the route that every one the opposite fighters take. Powerful fights up the ranks. Prime ten fighters, prime 5, world champions. Not this route with Tyson. That’s not the best way to do it.”
Jake isn’t going to work his method up the ranks like different fighters as a result of he’s clearly solely all for utilizing boxing as a aspect gig to make simple cash off of ex-MMA fighters and previous boxers.
Tommy Fury is the one boxer that Jake has fought, and he’s British home degree. He’s not world-class. If Jake was critical about having an actual profession, he’d battle guys like Jai Opetaia, Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Bivol, and Mairis Briedis. He gained’t battle them, and the explanations are apparent. That’s not simple cash.
“It’s going to be large enterprise. I can perceive Mike Tyson wanting to do that, the itch that he has, as a result of I’ve it every single day. Typically, we’ve to say, ‘It’s not our time anymore,’ and I like Mike.
“I hope he goes on the market and places on a efficiency of a lifetime. I like the eyeballs it’s going to carry boxing, and that’s all I care about,” mentioned De La Hoya.
Enterprise vs. Legacy
“Tyson nonetheless has the punching energy. That’s the very last thing that goes till you’re in your grave,” mentioned De La Hoya. “If Tyson catches him with a great one, it’s lights out for Jake Paul. Think about Tyson in an actual battle. He nonetheless has that punching energy.”
It’s going to be troublesome for Jake to get out of the primary two rounds with out Mike attending to his chin and nailing him with photographs. For that purpose, Jake is probably going going to be transferring round nonstop and seeking to tie Tyson up every time he will get close to. It’ll be type of like how Tommy Fury fought him along with his fixed clinching.
“If Jake Paul has the conditioning as a younger man that he’s, he ought to be capable of tire out Tyson. Yeah, he ought to be capable of tire out. That’s the historical past of the sport. Once more, one punch from Tyson can do it, and it’s sayonara,” mentioned De La Hoya.
