Based on Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Padres are “in talks” with free agent Tommy Pham and “may very well be transferring nearer” to an settlement. It will be a one-year contract within the $3MM to $4MM vary. Nightengale additionally experiences that the White Sox have an interest within the veteran outfielder if his negotiations with the Padres fall via.
Pham has been linked to San Diego via a number of latest experiences. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote that the staff remained “engaged in conversations” with Pham earlier this week, whereas Jon Heyman of the New York Post famous the Padres have been “amongst groups eying Tommy Pham.” Different outfielders linked to the Padres, specifically Adam Duvall and Michael A. Taylor, have now signed elsewhere, whereas different groups linked to Pham, such because the Diamondbacks and Pirates, have gone in a unique path.
The match for Pham in San Diego is evident. Jurickson Profar is presently slated to get a lot of the taking part in time in left area. The Padres are certainly hoping Profar bounces again from his career-worst season in 2023, however it might be good for supervisor Mike Shildt to have an alternative choice if that doesn’t occur. The staff may also want a chosen hitter as soon as Manny Machado is able to return to 3rd base; Pham performed 44 video games at DH final 12 months for the Mets and D-backs.
Pham beforehand performed for San Diego in 2020 and ’21, and Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported earlier this offseason that he can be open to a reunion.
As for the White Sox, they need to be set in left area and at DH with Andrew Benintendi and Eloy Jiménez, respectively. Nevertheless, the left-handed rookie Dominic Fletcher might use a platoon accomplice in proper area, and Chicago might use a right-handed bat for the bench. Presumably, Pham is trying to be greater than a bench bat and the brief facet of a platoon; he said as much earlier this winter. But, at this level within the offseason, he could must accept a restricted function, particularly if he needs to get in some spring coaching video games earlier than the common season begins. What’s extra, if he performs properly for the White Sox, he can earn extra taking part in time, and he can anticipate to be dealt to a contender earlier than the commerce deadline.
