The Rangers are going to pick the contract of first baseman Jared Walsh, with Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today amongst these to relay the information. Walsh was in camp on a minor league deal however can be added to the roster previous to Opening Day. Wilson adds that the membership outrighted infielder José Barrero, creating a gap on the 40-man roster. They may nonetheless want two extra roster spots for Wyatt Langford and José Ureña however may maybe accomplish that by transferring Tyler Mahle and Max Scherzer to the 60-day injured listing.
Walsh, 30, looks as if he would be the membership’s common first baseman for some time. Nathaniel Lowe suffered an indirect pressure a few weeks in the past, forcing the Rangers to pivot to backup plans. Walsh hit three dwelling runs this spring and walked at a 14% clip. He additionally struck out in a 3rd of his plate appearances however produced a stable batting line of .250/.368/.458.
If he can carry that over into the common season, it’ll make for a feel-good comeback story. He hit .280/.338/.531 for the Angels over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, resulting in a 130 wRC+ seemingly establishing himself as a mainstay of that membership within the course of.
However the final two years have been a battle. He hit simply .215/.269/.374 in 2022 and finally required surgical procedure to deal with thoracic outlet syndrome. Final yr, he needed to take care of neurological points, together with insomnia and complications, whereas hitting simply .125/.216/.279. The Angels outrighted him off the roster on the finish of the yr and Walsh secured a minor league take care of the Rangers.
If Walsh can overcome these two tough years and get again to the shape he confirmed previous to that, it will be a pleasant discover for the Rangers. It’d result in a little bit of a squeeze when Lowe will get again however that might be a very good drawback for the Rangers to have. Walsh doesn’t have roster flexibility since he’s out of choices however he does have between three and 4 years of service time, that means he could possibly be retained past this season if he hangs onto a roster spot for the entire marketing campaign.
Extra to return.
